This is Primarily, for James, But Feel Free to Enjoy

Around Christmas and his college graduation, I gave James a remastered release of one of my favorite movies, The Other, based on the book by one of my favorite (incidentally gay) horror authors, Thomas Tryon. The 1972, with script adapted by Tryon, is beautifully-made, with great actors - Uta Hagen, Diana Muldaur, Victor French, and a very young John Ritter. It is not exactly like the book, which I recommend anyone read, but the book, truly adapted to screen. The young twins in the film, Martin and Chris Udvarnoky, made this one film, and it's a shame, as they showed great talent in a complex psychological horror film.

This is one of the pieces from the soundtrack, one of my favorites - "The Brothers" - as it captures the subtlety of the boys, Holland and Niles, and the feeling of unease not quite manifested. It's by Jerry Goldsmith, who was one of the great horror film scorers of the '70's, and I put it here for James, because he hasn't watched the film yet, and it's easy to miss the music in the sheer lush overload of Robert Mulligan's direction.
